Our vessels
Ship’s Company has a 25 year history of teaching its members seamanship and maritime trades through its schooners and small boats. The unit hosts regular rowing and sailing days in Annapolis and Baltimore, both in kit and modern clothing, where unit members practice crewing her and have fun on the water. We also travel to water-based events throughout the Chesapeake, and visit the Great Lakes region once a year to participate in the War of 1812 Grand Tactical. If you want to learn traditional sailing, ropework, and woodworking skills, we are the group for you.
As of 2023 our boats comprise:
A 14-foot glued plywood lapstrake JOLLYBOAT, a period-tailored Oughtred “Tammie Norrie”, trailered and stored at Jefferson-Patterson Park MD. She has two rowing positions and is yawl-rigged with a standing lug main and marconi mizzen.
A 26-foot cold-moulded wooden CUTTER, trailered and stored in Linthicum, MD. Based on a ship’s boat of the early to mid 19th century, she takes ten double-banked rowing stations and a coxswain, with room in the bow to mount a King howitzer. In 2021, her mast-stepping and rigging with two lugsails was completed. The cutter, named Gunboat #1, is a long term loan from Historic Ships Baltimore.
A second 26-foot wooden CUTTER, also a long term loan from Historic Ships Baltimore, currently a project in conjunction with Lewes Historic Society, in Lewes DE boat shop. As of May 2023 she has been restored for operation under oar power.
A partnership with the 1/4 scale reproduction Baltimore schooner Lion of Fells Point, based on the schooner burned by HMS Menelaus in Bodkin Creek on August 24, 1812. Learn more on her Facebook Page.
We also have a 30-year partnership with USS Constellation of Baltimore.
