Exploring the 250th with ship’s company

Ship’s Company participates in several annual programs that discuss the life and material culture of sailors from 1770-1783, and we plan to participate in the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with our members and 26’ ten oar spritsail-rigged cutter.

With a few exceptions, our Revolutionary War material culture standards are “Progressive”, meaning our clothes are based on the best current understanding of the historical evidence available instead of “reenactorisms,” using fabric types and colors like those that were available during the American Revolution and doing visible stitching by hand. We support our members in building or improving their kits and meeting these goals by connecting them with sewing days, pattern making and fitting help, books, and online resources.

If you are interested in learning more about sailor’s clothing of the 1770s, we recommend perusing the blog British Tars: 1740-1790.
